| EDITORIAL |
When Swanson and Sons first introduced the TV dinner in 1954, the ready-made turkey dinner was such a hit consumers bought 10 million boxes in that year alone. The convenience and the portability of the TV dinner struck a chord with the American public, whose speed of life was quickening with the post- World War II industrial boom.
In urban centres across the globe, the need for convenience and portability has intensified. In Tokyo, where the 60 hour work week is commonplace, convenience stores are at the very forefront, with ready-made noodles and rice to suit every palette. Corner stores in New York stock fresh fruit and offer deli counters and salad bars. Other cities have variations on the 24-hour grocery store, laundromat, fitness centre and other amenities. Meanwhile, communications devices are more and more compact and offer a wider selection of functions with each new model.
Art is neither fast nor portable, but it too must adapt. In our premier issue of Folio, we have brought together over 50 artists, designers, writers, performers and musicians from places as diverse as Bangkok, Thailand to Nottingham, England. Folio is a portable exhibition, performance and library. We aim to create an international network of artists while offering the viewer an art experience that circumvents both geographical borders and genres.
Enjoy it and let us know what you think!
