History

In the spring of 2003 westsideArts was born. Scott Axtmann, pastor of Renaissance Church in Providence, and a handful of friends wanted to do something to foster the arts movement in Rhode Island. They rented the Columbus Theatre and planned an all day open-mic performing arts fest. They sent out emails to every performer they knew and splattered posters all over the city anticipating what might happen. The response was overwhelming. People came from all over and filled up about 7 hours of various types of performances-music, short film, spoken word, and dance. Several visual artists also came to display their work.

Out of this event many relationships were formed and a loosely knit community was developed- the common thread, a love for the arts. Several more open-mics were planned throughout that first year and more performers flooded the scene.

In 2004, westsideArts expanded its involvement to include supporting other arts organizations, promoting artists and performers, and providing a permanant space for creative types to connect with one another. The space, located at 168 Broadway, is the office of westsideArts.

Art

We believe in the power of art to shape culture and make the world a more beautiful place. Art is one of the greatest unifiers bringing different people together. Art is a window into the soul and a reflection of realities beyond words. The first aim of westsideARTS is to foster the arts movement in Rhode Island. This happens in a variety of ways.

Performing arts festivals and open-mics are held to provide opportunities on a regular basis. Space is provided for local artists to display their work and/or hold classes of any kind. Interesting films are shown free of cost. Volunteers are coordinatined to assist with other arts events in the city (like the Rhode Island International Film festival). Help with promotion through website/email, as well as concert posters and business cards is given to young performers starting out, free of charge. The spirit of this effort is to enhance the arts movement and get behind artists and performers with resources, opportunities, and support.

Soul

We believe that the fullfillment of an individual's greatest dreams will not happen apart from a healthy spiritual life. Some have called the spiritual part of a person the "center", "inner world", or the "hidden life". Part of our passion is to move people toward spiritual fullfillment. We want to help people be filled with beauty, love, peace, and freedom in the deepest parts. We provide various opportunities for people to explore spirituality such as prayer/ meditation nights, discussion groups and worship experiences.

Most of the facilitators of these events have a biblical worldview but nothing is taught in dogmatic terms. In fact, there is a sweet diversity of backgrounds. The events are intended to provide a safe environment to explore the teachings of Christ and spirituality. There is no criteria for involvment. Athiests, agnostics, individuals with other worldviews, and those with "unchristian" lifestyles are all encouraged to be part of these events. We are deeply committed to value each person's views.

Culture

There's nothing more ugly than an isolated organization that exists to serve itself. We don't want to become a little island disconnected from the rest of the culture. We want westsideARTS to become an integral part of the fabric of society and especially of the westside. Over the last few years the Westside has been gaining momentum and developing in many ways. We believe that it has the potential to become the greatest place in Rhode Island! Part of our vision is to contribute to the shaping of Westside culture.

No community is greater than its relationships. We want to inspire cooperation and tolerance on the Westside by demonstrating that spirit at our events. We are committed to supporting local businesses and non-profit organizations. We desire to meet needs in the community and do our part to make the Westside a beautiful place in every way. Last Christmas, for example, we partnered with RIFF and showed a holiday film to help the broadway area businesses succeed in their Miracle on Broadway Shopping Night. We also helped raise money for the Columbus Theatre revitalization. We are passionate about doing our part to make the Westside a place where people get along, crime is low and people are influenced to fulfill their dreams and impact the world in positive ways.
